Riot Releases Early Plans For LoL Preseason 2021 Gameplay

Riot Games is busy developing a healthier and more modern gaming environment for League of Legends. After addressing toxicity, LoL’s dev team shared its early plans for Preseason 2021’s gameplay changes.

The dev team, led by Lead Gameplay Designer Mark ‘Riot Scruffy’ Yetter, posted the gameplay plans on League of Legends’ official news site. In the blog post, Scruffy shared Riot’s vision inspired by the success of the Rise of the Elements:

“When we developed last year’s preseason, Rise of the Elements, we wanted to expand and evolve League of Legends in an unexpected and exciting way. Elemental rifts add even more spice and each game of League presents a new challenge. When looking at all of the possibilities for this year’s preseason, we decided to take a different approach. This year, we’re going to invest in League’s future by building up and refining one of League’s foundational gameplay systems.”

Given the end goal, Preseason’s 2021 gameplay changes will highlight a brand new shop interface and a complete rework for the item system. The estimated changes for the gameplay goes like this: 34% retained, 33% improved, and 33% new’.

Here’s the summary of the full plan:

Overall Objectives For The Preseason

  • Item purchasing is quick and intuitive.
  • Every champion can make strategic decisions through item choices in every game.
  • Item builds enable exciting ways to master your champion.
  • Items feel epically powerful and enhance your champion’s fantasy.
  • Iconic items are retained and you don’t have to relearn everything from scratch.

New Item System

Riot ultimately plans to turn the item system into a more efficient and beneficial tool for players. Aside from updating the entire system, the dev team also plans to polish every item in the storage. By the end of the update, all items must fit into one of two archetypes: a contextual purpose or a kit augment.

In-Game Shop Update

Revamping the in-game shop is probably one of the most exciting things that will ever happen to League of Legends. The shop isn’t exactly outdated, but the upgraded version will introduce new designs, better recommendations, and focused choices. Players can have a more curated and consistent shop experience, especially newbies.
