Riot Announces LoL 2021 Preseason Major Changes

After releasing the new patch 10.11 for League of Legends, Riot Games works on the 2021 LoL preseason. The dev team plans to remove the inter-division promotion games and update the ranked and matchmaking system.

Cody “Riot Codebear” Germain, Product Lead for Competitive Gameplay on LoL, revealed the set of plans today in LoL NA’s official news site. The dev team released all the measures they plan to take for transparency and to urge the community to share their feedback. Addressing all players, Codebear said:

“It’s been a busy year so far, and the team is super excited to keep the ball rolling and deliver more improvements to your competitive experience. We’ll continue to provide updates on what we’re shipping and how things are going, so please keep giving us your unfiltered feedback. As always, we’ll see you on the Rift.”

Overall Goals For 2020

  • Improve queue matchmaking quality without compromising queue time and availability.
  • Improve transparency around ranked and matchmaking systems.
  • Improve progression satisfaction and skill expression in our systems.
  • Make rewards more recognizable and relevant for time spent in League.
  • Players can play with, and find, others they want to play with.
  • Provide players who are subject to bad behaviors more visibility into actions taken. (Targeting toxicity / ‘Game Ruining Behavior’)

Partial Results For 2020

Codebear said that the dev team is focused on improving the quality of queue matchmaking without compromising queue time and availability. Since February 2020 up until today, here’s what they’ve accomplished:

Autofill Parity And Swap – Autofill imbalance has gone from 11.4% to almost 6%. In Patch 10.7, the dev team completely eliminated the bug affecting teammates’ role preferences.

Premade Parity – Imbalance premade matches have gone from 54% to 48%.

New Matchmaking Algorithm – The dev team upgraded the normal queues in patch 10.10.

Ranked Account Seeding – The seeding is now based on gameplay information from other queues instead of fixed placement.

2021 Preseason Ideas

All Riot’s goals and accomplishments will affect the 2021 preseason, but they also allotted specific updates for the actual series next year, which means we can expect more LoL betting sites to house a diverse selection of odds. The dev team plans to work on promo series, Ranked Informed Matchmaking, rewards and legacy recognition, and organized group play.
